Brief History of Leith
Walk the streets of Leith or to visit a Leith Church and you walk
in the footsteps of crusaders, Knight Templars and the Knights of
St John. Visit the Churches of Leith and you come face to face with
Scottish History. Most of the great events in Scottish History took
place near to or within Leith.

From the time of David I (1084-1153) Leith has had Royal connections
including Robert the Bruce and William Wallace for centuries. It
has known the hand of War, it has been on occasion been destroyed,
under siege by besieging Scots and English while the French held
the Port in 1560, faced death by plague in 1645 when 2736 people
died. It has been the home of famous doctors, writers, men of enterprise
who helped to found the British Empire, famous Soldiers and seamen
from the time of James III. Within the congregations of Leith were
real pirates, which in later years Robert Louis Stevenson was going
to immortalise in “Treasure Island”. In addition, of course the
true home of the Golf dating back to James III. The first Golf course
and Golf Club in the World was in Leith (not in Saint Andrews as
some believe!)
So if you are into History or want to see how a towns faith has
grown and changed over the centuries then this is a must for you.
Remember generations of Scots have left these shores to build their
lives overseas. In Canada, Australia, The United States of America,
New Zealand and all around the world. The Story of Scotland, Leith
and of the Church belong as much to them as it does to the people
who live here now. In every increasing numbers, their descendants
are returning every year to the cradle of their families in Leith.
